The PORi 2-Day Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation is a CEU accredited course for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists (PT/OT/SLP) working with oncology patients. This course is a prerequisite course for PORi Core and Adjunct Courses, and it provides a “gateway” of essential knowledge crucial for effective practice in prehabilitation and rehabilitation.

The course is designed to equip participants with core competencies, and it offers a comprehensive understanding of clinical management spanning from initial diagnosis to post-treatment survivorship. Beyond PTs/OTs/SLPs, healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, and exercise physiologists are also welcome to attend this interdisciplinary educational opportunity to enhance their understanding of oncology rehabilitation, ensuring collaborative and well-coordinated care for patients across various disciplines. Attendees have the opportunity to earn CEUs and can submit CEU requests individually to respective governing bodies for accreditation.

Course Requirements
Examination Participants are required to complete a written examination, the exam link will be sent to registered course participants that have fulfilled course requirements and course participants will have 45 minutes to complete the written exam. An understanding of the effects of cancer treatments on the body’s systems will be tested. A passing grade (75%) is required for Continuing Education Units to be issued. Participants who do not pass the exam will be eligible to sit a supplementary exam. Target Audience for the Course Qualified and Licensed Speech Language Pathologists (Speech Therapists), Physical Therapists (Physiotherapists), Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, and Certified Occupational Therapists are the target audience for the course. Other providers may take the course but will be responsible for their own Continuing Education Units. Ratio of Instructor to Participants The capacity of the classes is primarily limited by the size of the room if taught in-person but, ideally, we would prefer to keep the number of participants below 30 people so as to ensure optimal assimilation of information and concepts presented in the course. Online capacity can be higher but, again, we prefer to keep the numbers reasonable. Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation - Course ObjectivesUpon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Explain how Staging and Grading of cancer physiology and pathology provides a clinical foundation of management of cancer patients resulting in elements of predictability of care from which PTs/OTs/SLPs can generate clinical guidelines and practice pathways. • Understand the unique aspects of oncological surgeries and discuss prehabilitation and rehabilitation guidelines and treatment pathways for effective management of surgical oncology patients. • Describe the different types of radiation therapy treatment applications for oncology patients and the rehabilitative and rehabilitative management of adverse side effects of radiation therapy, including radiation induced fibrosis. • Discuss the PTs/OTs/SLPs roles in the clinical management of chemotoxicities, including management of myelosuppression, chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, cardiotoxicity, cancer related fatigue, hormone changes, and cancer related cognitive changes in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. • Describe salient signs and symptoms of cancer disease progression and be able to effectively evaluate for differential diagnoses with bone metastases, lung & liver metastases, and brain metastases. • Design safe and appropriate oncology plans of care and oncology exercise programs according to evidence-based guidelines, clinical tests and screening systems presented in the course. • Apply legislative and clinical frameworks for oncology patients to advocate for the need for early prehabilitative and rehabilitative intervention to mitigate life-long sequelae of survivorship challenges. • Demonstrate effective skilled care-based documentation of a cancer patients with multiple elements of acute, subacute, and chronic treatment phases, and how these fit into the US-based healthcare system and insurance-based outpatient/inpatient settings. • Implement strategies and utilize tools aimed at ensuring a well-balanced therapist approach to cancer care that enhances wellness, resilience, and reduces risk of burnout onset among therapists working in oncology rehabilitation settings. |
Pre-2018 PORi Certificate Holders Any therapists that completed our pre-2018 PORi Certificate Program will have their PORi-Certification automatically converted to the Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation plus the Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Therapist Course.
