Dry Needling has had a significant impact on physical therapy practice over the last several years and there is an ever-increasing trend of its use. The oncology patient population, however, is often excluded from the utilization of this treatment technique because of the need for more in-depth clinical understanding of the safety parameters, the implications, and the timing of its use. Through this 2-day Dry Needling in the Breast Cancer Population Course, participants will learn evidence-based practice for ensuring effective clinical integration of these techniques within this patient population.
External Prerequisite: Dry Needling Level 1 Course Prerequisites: Foundation in Oncology Rehabilitation & Breast Cancer Rehab Course Capacity: up to 25 participants Target Audience: PT / OT / PTA / OTA Course Type: Live Webinar / Video & Live Virtual Lab Sessions Contact Hours: 16 hrs Price: $575 (normally $750 but discounted for Live Virtual Sessions) |
Through this 2-day Dry Needling in the Breast Cancer Population Course, participants will learn evidence-based practice for ensuring effective clinical integration of these techniques within this patient population. Dry Needling techniques will be incorporated into the PORi systematic approach to address neuromusculoskeletal and lymphatic impairments resulting from medical treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormone suppressant therapy. Overall pain management will also be addressed for patients with metastatic disease.
Course structure will include lecture and lab portions so all participants will be able to practice the techniques discussed in the course. All dry needling skills will serve to enhance your clinical outcomes and expand your toolbox of appropriate management for the breast cancer patient.
This course will not serve as a Dry Needling Certification course.
Live and/or Video Patient Presentations
Running over 16 hours, the Dry Needling in the Breast Cancer Population continuing education course includes patient case presentations of patients who have undergone a variety of treatments for their cancer and present with a variety of conditions and side-effects relating to their cancer treatments. For virtual courses, patient presentations will run from between 60 minutes and 90 minutes via pre-recorded videos of patient treatments, technique demonstrations and patient interviews. In live courses or live lab supplementary courses, a patient case presentation can run as long as 2 hours.
Skills Lab Experience
To support participant learning, all students are required to have an assistant present during portions of the course to be able to dry needled. This person is able to be a friend, family member or colleague. We do not advise this person to be a patient. Participants will also need to have dry needles available in the following sizes: 15mm (x20), 30mm (x20), 40mm (x10) and 50mm (x5), sharps container, gloves, alcohol, cotton wipes and a multi-channel electrical stimulation unit to perform lab skills during the virtual course.
